Terms

Last updated 7 November 2026.

These terms cover the licence and use of Prates, the dictation and writing app for Mac. Its owner, operator, and licensor is cmd AS, registered as CMD AS, a Norwegian limited liability company, organisation number 938 827 478, registered in Foretaksregisteret. Its registered business address and head office are Sørkedalsveien 9B, 0369 Oslo, Norway. “We” and “us” mean cmd AS. Contact us at support@prates.ai or through the contact form.

Polar Software, Inc. is the merchant of record and seller for paid purchases. You buy the subscription from Polar; cmd AS licenses and supports the app. Polar’s buyer terms govern checkout and payment. These terms govern your use of Prates. Neither set of terms takes away rights that consumer law gives you and does not allow you to waive.

What you need

Prates requires macOS 14 or later; Apple silicon is recommended. It needs a downloaded speech model, microphone permission for dictation, and Accessibility permission to paste and read supported editors. Drafts and suggestions depend on what an editor exposes; not every app or field is supported. Screen reading and PowerPoint automation need additional permissions. Internet access is needed for sign-in, downloads, and periodic subscription checks. Local speech recognition does not need a cloud model. Optional cloud models and AI tools require your own account and may cost extra under their own terms.

The trial

Prates starts with seven days of full access. To use it, you sign in with your email address and a six-digit code that Prates emails you. There is no password, and no card is needed for the trial. The trial belongs to your account and to each Mac, so it does not start again when you reinstall Prates or sign in with another address. A virtual machine, or an address from a throwaway email service, gets no trial but can still subscribe.

When the trial ends, dictation, file transcription, rewriting, learning, and suggestions stop until you subscribe. Everything Prates has stored on your Mac stays there and remains readable and exportable.

Subscribing and paying

The base subscription price is US$9.99 per month. Before you order, Polar’s checkout shows the total recurring amount, including applicable taxes, and the billing currency. Check that total before paying. Polar takes payment and issues receipts and invoices.

If you subscribe during the trial, the days left of it come before the first payment. After that the subscription renews each month until you cancel.

Cancelling

You can cancel at any time in Polar’s customer portal or through Manage subscription in Prates. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for. Payments are not refunded when you cancel, unless the law or Polar’s buyer terms give you a right to a refund. Uninstalling Prates does not cancel a subscription.

Your right to withdraw

If you are a consumer in Norway or the EEA, the law may give you 14 days from the purchase to withdraw from it. Polar is the seller and handles withdrawal under its buyer terms. To withdraw, send Polar a clear statement before the deadline, for example with the form below.

Your license

During an eligible trial or an active subscription, cmd AS grants you a limited, non-exclusive licence to use Prates on up to three Macs that you use yourself, for personal or lawful professional writing. The account is for one person. Do not share or resell it, bypass access checks, or redistribute the proprietary parts of Prates without permission. These restrictions do not limit rights that applicable law or an open-source licence gives you, including any non-waivable rights to interoperability, study, or permitted backup copies.

Prates contains open-source components under their own licenses. They are listed in Prates under Settings, General, Acknowledgements.

Your content

You keep the rights you already have in your writing and other content. cmd AS claims no ownership of it or of the output you receive. This does not grant rights in someone else’s content or guarantee that AI output is unique, copyright-protected, or free of third-party rights. Prates stores your writing on your Mac and does not send it to cmd AS as part of dictation or writing. The privacy policy explains local learning, account data, and optional transfers.

Use Prates only with content and services you are authorised to use. Before reading another person’s information, recording someone, or sending work material to a model, AI tool, or backup service, make sure you have the necessary permissions and legal basis. Your choice in Prates is not another person’s consent or your employer’s approval. Do not use Prates to infringe rights, access information unlawfully, or interfere with other systems.

Third-party models and AI tools have their own terms, retention rules, and charges. Check those before connecting them. cmd AS is not responsible for their availability or behaviour, or for what they do with the text you send them. Factory Droid can open files while it stays running despite Prates’s tool restrictions; do not connect a tool unless its access is acceptable for your data. Keep appropriate backups of important work.

Review what AI writes

Speech recognition, rewriting, drafts, suggestions, and learned notes can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. Check the text, names, facts, and intended recipient before sending or relying on it. Prates is a writing aid, not a source of verified facts or professional medical, legal, financial, or other advice. Do not rely on it alone for a decision that could harm someone.

Updates and changes

Updates are included while you subscribe, and we provide the updates the law requires. We may change Prates or these terms for a valid reason, such as security, compatibility, a legal requirement, or a change by Apple or a provider. We give notice of a price increase, or of a change that is materially worse for you, as the law requires, and you can then cancel. Consumers keep any further statutory rights.

Liability

Prates is provided as it is. We do not promise that it, or the text it produces, is free of errors or suits a particular purpose.

If you are a consumer, you have the rights that mandatory consumer law gives you, including under digitalytelsesloven, and these terms do not limit them. That law does not cover loss in a business.

Business customers: to the extent the law allows, cmd AS is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data, or business interruption, and its total liability arising from Prates is limited to the fees paid for Prates in the twelve months before the claim arose. This business limitation does not apply to consumers.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for intent, gross negligence, or personal injury where the law does not allow it to be limited.

Law and contact

Norwegian law governs these terms, and consumers keep the mandatory protection of the law where they live. Write to support@prates.ai or use the contact form about Prates, or to support@polar.sh about a purchase. Norwegian consumers can also seek mediation through Forbrukertilsynet.
